Three peacekeepers from the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) were killed and six others wounded in a complex attack in the region of Timbuktu (north), a statement from the UN mission announced on Wednesday. .
According to the statement, during a security operation, a company of MINUSMA struck improvised explosive devices before “being the target of fire by unidentified armed men”.
The incident occurred on Wednesday about 20km north of the town of Bambara-Maoudé, on the Douentza-Tombouctou axis, in the Tombouctou region. “The robust response of the peacekeepers prompted the cowardly attackers to flee,” the statement said.
The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Mali and Head of MINUSMA Mahamat Saleh Annadif “strongly condemned this new attack against the peacekeepers who put their lives in danger on a daily basis in the service of peace and stability in Mali” .
“At a time when all efforts are being made to bring Mali out of the rut, I deeply deplore the upsurge in these attacks against the national and international forces, as well as the civilian populations,” he declared, while ensuring that MINUSMA will spare no effort to carry out its mandate in all its areas of deployment despite this difficult and unpredictable environment.
