The publication classified Navalny in the Icons category, which also features Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, singers Britney Spears and Dolly Parton, tennis player Naomi Osaka and others.
The accompanying text about Navalny was written by Garry Kasparov, head of the Council of the Human Rights Defense Fund.
“This year, Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny did the unimaginable: he showed dedication and courage. In January, after recovering in Germany after a near-fatal poisoning, Navalny returned to Russia. Despite – or potentially because of – significant attention within the country and around the world to his attempted assassination and return, he was arrested after landing, ”Kasparov’s note says.
Protests in support of Navalny were “brutally suppressed”, and in the summer the court banned the opposition’s political and anti-corruption projects, calling them extremist, Kasparov continues. Many of Navalny’s supporters have been detained or forced to flee Russia, the column says.
“Now Navalny is in one of the worst prisons in Russia, his life is in the hands of a dictator who, apparently, has already tried to kill him once for exposing the grotesque corruption of his regime. <...> Even the almighty Vladimir Putin recognizes the strength of one fearless man, ”Kasparov writes.
Navalny was not the only Russian on Time’s list. In the category “Innovators” magazine included Vitalik Buterin, a Canadian-Russian programmer, creator of the Ethereum blockchain platform. In the same category, there are, among others, the head of SpaceX Elon Musk and the president of NVIDIA Jen-Hsun Huang.
In the Leaders category, Time included US President Joe Biden, US Vice President Kamala Harris, former US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, World Trade Organization head Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, Israeli premiere of Naftali Bennett.
Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi and leader of the Taliban political wing * Abdul Ghani Baradar were also included in the list of “leaders”.
