Around 11:30 a.m. it started. the funeral mass in memory of Leonor Oyarzún, widow of former President Patricio Aylwin, who died early this Friday, January 21, at the age of 102.

The mass was attended by National Secretary of the Christian Democracy, David Morales, on behalf of the National Board. “We were here to deliver condolences to the Aylwin family, but also as a sign of recognition and gratitude for everything she gave us in her life”.

“Not only accompanying Don Patricio in such an important stage for our country, but because she was a Christian Democrat until her death (…) and we as a party were also part of his family, so We did not want to be absent, and we send you the greetings and condolences of the Christian Democracy”.

The actress Paz Bascuñán, granddaughter of Leonor Oyarzún, dedicated an emotional farewell to her on her Instagram account. “What will become of my life without your life Ita mine, here I am. I will try to adapt. Seeking in me his strength, his lucidity, his enthusiasm, his determination, his wisdom, humor, calm, balance. Ita. Queen. Matriarch. Mother. solid. Distinguished. enjoyer Elegant. Giant”.

“It’s the end of a way of existing… but this morning it’s still dawn, maybe the flowers in your garden are radiant, maybe I get up with my family to say goodbye to you, BELOVED GRANDMOTHER. Life goes on and I will take you with me forever.

Previously, the wake was held during the afternoon of last Friday. On that occasion he attended electro president Gabriel Boric and former president Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, who delivered their condolences to the Aylwin-Oyarzún family.

The former first lady married Aylwin in October 1948, with whom she had five children, including the former Minister of Education of the Ricardo Lagos government, Mariana Aylwin.

During the administration of Eduardo Frei Montalva (1964-1970) she was one of the founders and the first vice president of the CEMA Mothers’ Centers Relating Central, and after Aylwin’s arrival in La Moneda in 1990, in the return to democracy, Oyarzún -who also had DC militancy-, assumed a more leading role by becoming the first lady (although he preferred not to use that title).
