The organizers had warned that the Tokyo Games will be “the most innovative in history”. But the absence of spectators canceled many innovative experiences promised by the Organizing Committee of the Games, such as the use of self-driving cars to transport visitors, the use of facial recognition cameras at the entrance to stadiums, or the presence of robots to guide fans. On the other hand, innovation in the retransmission of disciplines has not been affected.

Several innovative technologies are thus used during these Games to enrich the viewers’ experience. Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), the official broadcaster of the Olympics, has partnered with several companies – such as Alibaba or NTT, Japan’s main telecom operator – to provide innovative coverage of the disciplines.
