Toprak Razgatlioglu: “I jumped 21 meters” / Superbike World Championship

Although Superbike World Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu set the fastest time in the Autodromo do Algarve near Portimao on Friday, the Yamaha star caused astonishment in other ways.

Again and again Toprak Razgatlioglu delights the fans with tricks like his wheelies on a scooter at the paddock show in Donington Park. He also regularly entertains the media representatives. In Most he did handstands on a folding chair and balanced on it – until it collapsed. In the spacious media center of the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, after his best time on Friday, he showed a handstand rollover, which would have turned into a flick flack with a longer run-up.

World Cup leader Alvaro Bautista smiled: “I’m too old for this kind of stuff, and the risk of injury is too great for me. Toprak should keep going, it’s more dangerous than riding a motorcycle…»

The world champion also caused amazement on the race track. After his experience with the British Superbikes at Cadwell Park, he couldn’t resist using the crest in Portimao as a jumping hill. “We checked the data, I jumped 21 meters,” Toprak grinned. “I didn’t care about the lap time at the moment, I just looked at how far it went. It didn’t look like 21 meters, but that’s true. I chose a wide line in the corner ahead and took a run-up to be faster. Normally you try everything there not to take off – that was for fun. Sometimes it’s better if you don’t have wings. That’s what I practiced at Cadwell Park.”

Did you ask Yamaha for permission for your flying insert? “No,” laughed the Turk, “I only told Dorna on Thursday.”

Incidentally, Razgatlioglu was driving best time on Friday and finished second Michael Rinaldi (Aruba.it Ducati) by 0.245s on the combined timesheets of FP1 and FP2. The 25-year-old also has excellent pace, with only Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki) and Championship leader Alvaro Bautista (Ducati) riding at his level.

“I started the day strong, I like this track,” said the man with the number 1 car. “We worked well for the races, I’m satisfied. Ready to go.”
