36 km – Defect and chaos at Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard has a defect and immediately swaps his bike with Tiesj Benoot. But that’s way too big for him. When the first group that was left behind came to him with other teammates, he took Steven Kruijswijk’s machine, but then the team car was there and he switched again – to his own spare machine! Big mess! That took time!

38km – O’Connor loses several minutes today

Ben O’Connor’s backlog is growing. The Australian is repeatedly slowed down because he encounters team vehicles on the pavement – and it’s almost impossible to get through in the dust. Bitter day for last year’s fourth! He’s already 1:50 minutes behind!

42 km – sextet still ahead

After Sector 7, the top six are still a little over two minutes ahead – and they’re still six. In the peloton, Ineos Grenadiers are now setting the pace, with Geraint Thomas in second. But right behind him is Tadej Pogacar and also Bora – hansgrohe can be seen at the front with Nils Politt and Aleksandr Vlasov.

30 miles – O’Connor lagging behind

Ben O’Connor (Ag2r Citroen), last year’s Tour fourth, had a defect and is now being brought back towards the peloton by some teammates. However, he is already more than a minute behind! This is going to be a really difficult task!

50 km – Asgreen quintet recaptured

The group with Asgreen didn’t get far and were caught again. But things are slowly getting serious in the main field. If you want to win the stage, you have to do something slowly. Because the leaders still have 2:55 minutes!

54 km – Sector 10: Quick-Step attacked

3:10 minutes are still on the clock between the six escapees and the peloton. But now it’s off to a good start! Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl is going full throttle with Kasper Asgreen at the helm! Four men join immediately: Mathieu van der Poel, Mads Pedersen and Alberto Bettiol plus a second Quick-Step man.

65 km – Quick-Step retrieves Duo

The six leaders are still 3:18 minutes ahead of the main field, which has now collected Bauer and Pedersen again. The duo have realized that this push was relatively pointless.

72 km – Pedersen and Bauer attack

The first sector is history and you have to remember: The Slovenians Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic were right at the front – strong performance. After the cobbles, Mads Pedersen (Trek – Segafredo) and Jack Bauer (BikeExchange – Jayco) are now attacking from the peloton to make their way and close the 3-minute gap to the front.

77 km – The cobblestones are calling!

Our top six reach sector 11 at Villers-au-Tertre, the first cobblestone section. The peloton is still 3:35 minutes behind, but is now rushing through the prairie at high speed. The fights for positions are in full swing – and Van Aert is far behind and doesn’t seem to be completely fit again.

87 km – Yellow back in the peloton

It took quite a while because the peloton obviously doesn’t slow down so close to the first cobblestone sectors. But after a little more than ten kilometers, Van Aert and Kruisjwijk finally managed to catch up with the main field again.

98 km – Van Aert am Boden

Fall off the yellow jersey! Wout Van Aert went down after tangling with team-mate Steven Kruijswijk when the peloton in front of them braked at the exit of a roundabout. Both are quickly back on the bike and are now chasing after the peloton. That is currently around 3:30 minutes behind the top six.

Yellow goes down! Van Aert crashes with teammate Kruijswijk

117 km – intermediate sprint: Jakobsen steals a point from Van Aert

2:40 minutes behind the six leaders, Fabio Jakobsen and Wout Van Aert sprint for seventh place in the intermediate sprint. Jakobsen wins, but only gains a single point against the Belgian in the fight for green, because he is eighth.

124 km – 2:45 minutes for the sextet

The six leaders are slowly but steadily expanding their lead. But that’s anything but easy, because the main field is already setting a decent pace.

135km – Breakaway trios team up

The two trios in front of the main draw have now become a sextet. Cort Nielsen, Powless, Clarke, Gougeard, Boasson Hagen and van der Hoorn are a little over a minute ahead of the peloton.

142 km – Walscheid goes down

We’re still a long way from the first cobblestone sector, but we’ve already seen the first falls. Now Max Walscheid (Cofidis) goes down in the middle of the field in a very strange way. It looks as if it suddenly knocks the handlebars out of his hand. But then you can see that his front wheel is broken. He waits for a replacement and then drives on immediately.

broken rim! Walscheid falls well before the cobblestones

145 km – Chaser trio forms

The leading trio around Cort Nielsen are nearly 20 seconds clear and now another trio is breaking away from the peloton: Neilson Powless (EF Education – EasyPost), Simon Clarke (Israel – Premier Tech) and Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels – KTM). ).

2:05 p.m. – Degenkolb full of anticipation

Before the start, Bernhard Eisel spoke to John Degenkolb (Team DSM) for us. The 2015 Roubaix winner is particularly hot today – after all, it’s also about the cobblestone sector that was named after him. Here’s the interview:

“Many are scared today” – Degenkolb is looking forward to his patch

153 km to drive – Interesting trio

Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education – EasyPost), Taco van der Hoorn (Intermarché – Wanty – Gobert) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (TotalEnergies) broke away immediately after the start. However, in contrast to the last few days, the main field does not give up immediately. The trio has only five seconds at first.

2:00 p.m. – Start free!

The race is on! And it’s hard to believe, but: Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education – EasyPost) is among the top three attackers of the day again!

1:45 p.m. – 11 sectors and 19.4 kilometers of cobblestones

This 5th stage is only 153.7 kilometers long today. But there are eleven plaster sectors along the way – including the one dedicated to John Degenkolb: These are the eleven cobblestone sectors of Stage 5

1:35 p.m. – The peloton rolls

We have started to move. But first it’s more than ten kilometers neutralized through Lille to Roubaix. The sharp start should not take place there until 2:00 p.m.
