Tourism in Spain increased by 24% in the first half of the year

Spain received 37.5 million international tourists in the first half of 2023, an increase of 24% over the same period last year, the government announced Wednesday.

The figure is lower than that registered in the first half of 2019, the year before the pandemic, when it amounted to 38 million. Even so, the authorities insist that the figure shows that international tourism has recovered after that health crisis.

Most of the foreign visitors were from Britain, with some 8 million. Then come France and Germany, with 5 million each.

Spain is highly dependent on tourism, which comprises 12% of its gross domestic product.

The northeastern region of Catalonia, home to Barcelona and the Costa Brava, was the most visited region of Spain.
