Tourism: UNWTO SG promises 24th “historic” General Assembly in Marrakech

Tbilisi (Georgia) – The 24th General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) that Marrakech will host in 2021 will be “historic”, assured its Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili on Wednesday in Tbilisi.

“The next UNWTO General Assembly will be historic. We will do our best to make it one of the most successful post-pandemic events ”, indicated Mr. Pololikashvili, in a statement to the MAP, on the sidelines of the work of the 112th session of the Executive Council of this specialized agency of United Nations, in which Morocco took part.

In this context, he specified that the meeting in Marrakech will be an opportunity to discuss the future of the tourism sector hard hit by the health crisis, inviting all the member states of the organization as well as the private sector to respond to it. .

The Secretary General of the UNWTO also stressed that Morocco is “an excellent destination” to promote and “a model” in the tourism sector, highlighting the Kingdom’s great experience in the field as well as its infrastructure.

Morocco was designated as the host country for the 24th UNWTO General Assembly during the previous meeting held last September in Saint Petersburg, Russia, obtaining 76 votes out of 107 votes, against 15 for the Philippines. and 13 for Kenya.

The UNWTO General Assembly takes place every two years. It is one of the most important events for the world tourism sector.

The 112th session of the organization’s Executive Council, which brings together around thirty Member States, is an opportunity to exchange experiences on the management of the crisis linked to the pandemic, to coordinate the actions of governments and to clarify the future directions for the revival of international tourism.
