Konrad Laimer and Bayern Munich. The never-ending story of the transfer summer. The Austrian was not in the RB Leipzig squad on Sunday.

Munich – The FC Bayern celebrated a tailor-made start to the new Bundesliga season. The German champions won 6-1 (5-0) at Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt and caused a stir not only nationally. Coach’s squad Julian Nagelsman was so convincing on Friday evening that fear is already rampant in Europe.

New signing Sadio Mané, Serge Gnabry and Jamal Musiala stood out against the Hessians, and midfielder Joshua Kimmich not only liked his cheeky free kick to take the lead. Bayern have proven that they can too could score a lot of goals without Robert Lewandowski, who had migrated away.

Will the record champions’ squad be strengthened again despite the gala start? There will probably be no more transfers on the offensive, which was announced Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic on Friday evening before the game in Frankfurt. But maybe for midfield? The name has been buzzing there for weeks Konrad Laimer through Säbener Strasse.

The Austrian from RB Leipzig wants to go to Munich, but the transfer fee of 30 million from RB Leipzig is too expensive for Bayern. Laimer’s contract with the Saxons expires in 2023, then he would be free of charge. Or is he already coming? A possible indication that the transfer could be on the home stretch: Laimer was not in the RB squad on Sunday afternoon when Leipzig was 1-1 (1-0) at VfB Stuttgart.

Officially due to injury, Laimer is said to have had ankle problems. But maybe it’s also possible that the midfielder doesn’t want to take any unnecessary risks so as not to jeopardize a possible transfer. A cautionary example: Leroy Sané tore his cruciate ligament in what was supposed to be his last game for Manchester City, which is why the transfer to Bayern was postponed and the turbo dribbler only moved to Munich a year later.

Another reason why Laimer could still switch to Bayern this week is Timo Werner. The DFB striker is said to be about to return to RB Leipzig. And not just on loan, but firmly committed. Perhaps this transfer was only possible because a Laimer sale is looming and RB therefore that has the wherewithal for the Werner deal?

In the coming days, the decision should be made as to how Laimer, FC Bayern and RB Leipzig will continue. The matter will probably not drag on until the end of the transfer period on August 31. (smk)
