Transfers: Kasper Schmeichel on his departure to Nice: “It was time to challenge me”

Kasper Schmeichel, why did you decide to leave Leicester where you had been playing for 11 years?

Kasper Schmeichel : “Leicester is a club that I love. The decision to leave family members is difficult. But I am 35 years old. It was time to challenge myself, with the desire to continue to grow as a player and human being: a new language, a new experience for my family. But the main reason was the fact that Ineos has very high ambitions for Nice. They want to make it a top club. I see similarities there with the moment where I joined Leicester. My agent was approached about a very interesting project. I spoke with Dave Brailsford (Ineos sports director, Editor’s note). He gave me the directions, talked about the coach, and everything they want to put in place. I was convinced. In football, if you have a feeling, you have to go there, trust the people you meet. I also spoke with Grandpa Mendy and Ricardo Pereira (ex-Niçois from Leicester), who spoke well of this family club. It got into my thinking.”

Payet minimizes tensions at OM: “We tried to destabilize us”

I don’t feel like a headliner

You are the headliner of the club. Could it be a weight?

K.S. “I don’t feel like a headliner, that’s for sure! Very good players are more important than me at the club. My objective is to bring solid foundations, stability. It’s also to represent the club on and off the pitch in the best way. This imposes responsibilities. First, to perform well. I’m not here to get out of big saves all the time. But to consolidate the bases. Then, our attackers will make us win.”

France and Denmark will be in the same group at the World Cup. Do you think you better familiarize yourself with the Blues?

K.S. : Over the last 30 years, 80% of the time, France and Denmark have found themselves in the same group, during the main tournaments. We often played them. They are world champions, one of the best teams in the world. It will be a wonderful challenge. I look forward.”
