While Lionel Messi did not show up for the pre-season coronavirus screening tests for which he was summoned this morning at Barça’s training center, the Spanish Professional Football League has issued a statement in order to clarify its contractual situation.
“Regarding the different interpretations published in recent days in various media, about the contractual situation of player Lionel Andrés Messi with FC Barcelona, La Liga considers it appropriate to clarify […] that this contract is currently in force and has a “release clause” applicable, as soon as Lionel Andrés Messi decides to unilaterally terminate it […] In application of this law […] La Liga will not terminate the license (prior to his transfer) of the player until the latter has paid the amount of this clause. “
700 M € to pay
This means that, in accordance with what Barça management has been ensuring in recent days and contrary to what the legal representatives of the player believed, the six-fold Ballon d’Or France Football cannot join another club until he will not have to pay the 700 M € corresponding to his release clause, while his contract runs until June 2021.
