US President Donald Trump raised the mood against Governor Gretchen Whitmer during a campaign appearance in the US state of Michigan.
“You have to get your governor to open your state,” Trump called on Saturday (local time) to his supporters in Muskegon, alluding to Corona containment measures. Thereupon his followers chanted: “Lock them up!” Trumps said, “Lock them all up.”
Last week, investigations by the federal FBI and Justice Department in Michigan led to the arrest of more than a dozen suspects, who are alleged to have planned the kidnapping of Governor Whitmer and the assault on Parliament in Lansing. “I think they said she was threatened,” Trump said when the shouts rose again. “And she blamed me!”
Whitmer had accused Trump of fueling anger in the corona pandemic. In the spring, Trump had fueled protests against Whitmer’s measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus and, for example, on Twitter «Free Michigan!» written. On Saturday, Whitmer spoke up on Trump’s remarks. “This is exactly the rhetoric that has put the lives of myself, my family and other government officials in danger. It has to stop, ”she wrote on Twitter.
Less than three weeks before the election, despite the ongoing pandemic, Trump is holding appearances in particularly competitive states. Michigan is currently experiencing a dramatic increase in new corona infections. According to the local Ministry of Health, more than 2000 were detected on Friday – more than ever since the pandemic began.
