Caterina Alagna and Melissa Lining, both now 23, were raised by the wrong families for three years after a confusion at the hospital in Mazara of the Vallo, a fishing port in Sicily, relates the Daily Mail.
Mothers realized the mistake when the girls were three years old, and swapped the children with the right families. Then the biological families decided to raise the daughters together.
“The girls actually grew up with four parents and eight grandparents, and the experience worked.“said Maura Weather in Caporiccio, author de Sisters Forever, a book on the history of girls.
The two girls were born 15 minutes apart on New Years Eve 1998. Three years later, Marinella Alagna was going to look for his daughter, Melissa, at the nursery and noticed a striking resemblance between another girl, Caterina, and her two other daughters.
“I recognized Caterina’s mother, Gisella Lining, motherhood, and I had suspicions. Fifteen days later, we did DNA tests and I lost my mind. It was too surreal, too impossible“, she says.
Initially, the situation was difficult and families were not enthusiastic about the idea of exchanging their children. “I challenge anyone to raise a girl for three years and abandon her for a simple mistake“said Ms. Lining.
The families then made the decision to raise them together. Thanks to this idea, families became closer and the girls became inseparable. “We are a phenomenon. We have eight grandparents, two fathers and two mothers“said Caterina.
Melissa explained that she and Caterina learned the truth when she was eight years old. “Today none of us have a memory of life until we were three years old“, did she say.
“Today they are more twins than sisters and there is a kind of love that binds the two families.“, said Weather in Caporiccio.
