UADF not entitled to reduce fuel tax: Minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister KN Balagopal has asked the Congress, which had raised taxes 13 times without giving the people the benefit of the doubt when the price of crude oil fell in the global market, now wants Kerala to reduce taxes. The main reason for the rise in prices is the UPA government’s decision to leave fuel pricing to the market.

The BJP government has increased the tax on petrol from Rs 8.03 to Rs 31.5 and on diesel from Rs 2.10 to Rs 30. Out of this, Rs 10 and Rs 5 have now been reduced. In Kerala too it has been reduced accordingly. That is how petrol was reduced by Rs 1.5 and diesel by Rs 2.5. When the Center increased taxes, some demanded that Kerala should reduce taxes without getting a share of the loot.

The Center should also understand the additional liability caused by the increase in fuel prices. The 6% DA center was added in 2 phases. 4000 crore is the liability of Kerala due to this. KSRTC incurs an additional expenditure of around Rs 1.5 crore per day on fuel. The Congress, which is going to strike with the BJP, should listen to what Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gellot has to say. Balagopal also asked whether the BJP was the high command of the Congress in the state.
