The index is based on studies by international organizations such as the International Development Institute, the World Economic Forum and the Bertelsmann Foundation. The rankings are based on the level of corruption in the public sector in each of the 180 countries. It scores from zero to 100 points under the supervision of experts and business leaders. Points are calculated according to the degree of corruption. The country with zero points has the highest level of corruption and the region with 100 points has the most corruption free.

The UAE ranks 24th out of 180 countries globally. Qatar is ranked 31st. Saudi Arabia, ranked third in the region, is ranked 52nd globally with 53 points. The UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are the three countries where major development projects based on Vision 2030 are in progress. These countries have taken a number of strong measures to rid the country of corruption. Libya, Yemen and Syria are the most corrupt countries in the region.
