LONDON (Archyde.com) – Britain has supplied Ukraine with the Storm Shadow long-range cruise missile, the British government said on Thursday.
Britain is the first country to provide long-range missiles to Ukraine. Ukraine has been requesting long-range missiles for months, but support from allies such as Britain and the United States has so far been limited to short-range weapons.
“Russia must recognize that its own actions led to the delivery of these weapons to Ukraine,” Defense Secretary Wallace told parliament. The Ukrainian government has promised to use the missile only in Ukraine and not in Russia.
Missiles have already been shipped to Ukraine.
The Storm Shadow is an air-launched long-range missile manufactured by European missile manufacturer MBDA. According to the company’s website, it is used for the purpose of attacking critical infrastructure. It has a range of over 250 kilometers.
After the United States, the UK is the second largest donor of military aid to Ukraine, reaching the equivalent of £2.3 billion ($2.9 billion) last year. It has so far been the first to supply Ukraine with more sophisticated weapons, albeit at a much lower value than the United States.
