As a nation, we’re a flock of fried chicken lovers. In fact, the entire month of September, which happens to be National Chicken Monthis devoted to the crispy, sometimes greasy, goodness of this staple for potlucks, picnics, and family dinners.
In the spirit of National Chicken Month, Chris Williams, owner of Four Pegs Smokehouse in Louisville’s Germantown neighborhood, will fly the coop and head to New Orleans, to compete in the 2023 National Fried Chicken Festival.
You may remember we highlighted Williams in July when he appeared on the Food Network’s”BBQ Brawl with Bobby Flay.” While in New Orleans, Williams hopes to come out at the top of the pecking order as he represents the Bluegrass State.
“Keeping it local is important to me,” Williams said.
Four Pegs Smokehouse will compete for bragging rights in the National Fried Chicken Festival’s two highly coveted tasting contests, “Best Fried Chicken” and “Best Use of Fried Chicken in a Dish,” judged by a distinguished panel of judges composed of food critics, restaurateurs, journalists, influencers, and more. The competition is Sept. 30-Oct.1.
But we won’t put all our eggs in this one fried chicken festival basket. When it comes to comes to this particular dish, few brands are as famous across the world as Kentucky Fried Chickenbetter known as KFCwhich is headquartered in Louisville.
Gambling.com had some fun with the country’s fried chicken frenzy and decided to work out which states are the most obsessed with Kentucky’s fried chicken franchise. They created a per capita ranking that measures the number of KFC outlets in each state, along with the popularity of three KFC-centric search terms over the past year (“KFC,” “KFC near me” and “KFC menu.”)
Each state was given a “KFC Obsession Rating out of 100” based equally on these two factors and no surprise, Kentucky has something to cluck about as the survey confirmed the Bluegrass State rules the roost as the U.S. state most obsessed with KFC. The home of the fast food chain can’t get enough of the Colonel’s chicken, topping the study with a KFC Obsession Rating of 98 out of a possible 100.
According to the surveyWest Virginia is the second most KFC-centric state with Mississippi taking third place and Indiana and Arkansas tied in fourth place.
So no matter how to celebrate, happy National Fried Chicken Month.
