“The United States condemns Russia’s persistent use of brutal tactics against peaceful protesters and journalists for the second week in a row and repeats its call to release those who were detained, including Alexei Navalni,” the Secretary of State said on Twitter.

The Russian police deployed an important device this Sunday and closed access to several cities during new demonstrations in the country in favor of Navalni.

According to the organization OVD-Info, specialized in monitoring the demonstrations in Russia, there were at least 1,643 arrests in 70 cities. The majority, 338, took place in Moscow.

Since his return to Russia on January 17, Navalni has been the subject of multiple legal proceedings that, according to him, are due to political reasons.

The opponent will appear before the judges next week.

These new mobilizations take place after protests last Saturday, which brought together tens of thousands of Russians and resulted in more than 4,000 arrests and the opening of some 20 criminal proceedings.
