The older population, from the age of 70-75, became last year the Covid’s preferred target and in this 2021 its consideration of priority group to receive the vaccine is showing that the immunization works. That first and famous first prick to Araceli Hidalgo placeholder image On December 27, a vaccination already completed in residences and among those over 80 years of age began, which in three months shows hopeful data.
The year started with 365 deaths from coronavirus in a week in residences, while in last seven days of March 23 died. In general terms, a 30% reduction in deaths for any cause in the population from 75 years of age since the first vaccinated received the second dose of vaccine and one more week was completed, which is the period in which the expected full immunization of the vaccines is achieved.
These conclusions are obtained from calculation of deaths in residences since the beginning of 2021 prepared by the IMSERSO and from an experimental statistics of the INE on weekly deaths -by any cause, not only Covid- by age group, which starts in 2019 and will last, in principle, for the duration of the pandemic .
The data shows that vaccination takes effect in the ages that, according to the vaccination plan, have already been immunized. That is, people aged 80 and over and also a part, although not specified, of people between 75 and 79 years old, since they live in residences. According to the IMSERSO, in 2011 20% of people between 70 and 79 years old lived in residences, as did 53% between 80 and 89 years old and 23% of those who were over 90.
Of the 51,000 deaths caused by the virus in Spain until July 2020, 80% were over 75, according to big data company Inverence. Since the beginning of 2021 and, with it, the vaccination against Covid, what the weekly death data reflects is a de-escalation of deaths.
It did not start with the new year and in January there were still weeks in which deaths increased, in line with the third wave that brought Christmas. The decrease begins to be appreciated once the first vaccinated completed their immunization process. That is, they received the first dose, the second at 21 days and a week later all the anticipated antibodies arrived. That brings us to the fifth week of the year (the first in February), when there were 8,715 deaths aged 75 and over.
The first sharp decline has occurred since that first week of February. It was from then on when the vaccination of the older population – in residences or at home in the case of those over 80 years of age – was constant and the periods between the first dose, the second at 21 days and the week after were covered. to complete the immunization. From the fifth week of the year reduction of around 30% of deaths for any reason among those over 75 is continuous.
The downward progression has continued until the latest data from the INE, corresponding to the penultimate week of March, when the deceased aged 75 and over were 5,736. In the same week of 2020, in one of the worst moments of the pandemic, the number of deaths was much higher: 58.1% more in the 75 to 79 age group; 57% more in the cohort from 80 to 84; 58.2% more in the 85-89; and 37.3% more among those over 90.
Still, the drop in deaths since vaccination began is much better seen in nursing homes, Covid black hole and where 29,408 people died since the pandemic was declared until February 2021, according to data collected by the Government of the communities.
The progression is similar to the general population in its upper bands, but much more pronounced. The year began in the second wave, with an increase in deaths that stopped the first time the cadence between the first and second doses ended and the week after to complete the immunization. In the first week of February, deaths fell by 20% -from 790 to 628- and from there began a decrease of more than 96% deaths in residences due to Covid between February and the end of March. Between 22 and 28 of last month only 23 deaths were registered.
