Valérie Pécresse appointed LR candidate for the presidential election, the reactions of the opposition

The Republicans (LR) party now has its candidate for the 2022 presidential election. Valérie Pécresse won 60.95% of the vote at the end of the LR congress, against 39.05% for the deputy of the Alpes-Maritimes Eric Ciotti. If the political leaders of the party and the right unanimously welcomed the appointment of the president of the Ile-de-France region, the other contenders for the Elysee have criticized her too right-wing line for the left-wing opposition, too « macronist » for the far right.

The environmental candidate, Yannick Jadot, attacked her on Twitter by designating her as a « candidate homophobe » because of its participation and support for the La Manif pour tous movement, and “Anti-immigrant” echoing his right-wing immigration line. The candidate of La France insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, also reacted on Twitter by congratulating the new candidate and inviting her to debate.

The far right reaches out to LR voters

Opposite the political spectrum, Marine Le Pen, candidate of the National Rally called LR voters “Disappointed” to join her. “They always have the possibility of coming to take part in my campaign where they will find an assumed defense, uninhibited, of the nation, of the identity, of the borders”, the far-right candidate said on Saturday.

It is “The most macronist” contenders of the right, reacted Mme Le Pen in front of the press. According to her, the president of the Ile-de-France region has “Almost exactly the same profile as Emmanuel Macron” and a “Most certainly on a considerable number of subjects the same positions”. “It’s sad for LR voters” who “Expressed their wish to leave this Macron compatible side” and “Will not have succeeded in doing this”, she insisted.
