The Outaouais is the only new region in Quebec that will pass into the orange zone on Monday, a change strongly influenced by the situation of its neighbor Ottawa.
The federal capital is already in the orange zone since Tuesday, but benefits from much more flexible health measures since the emergency levels do not agree from one province to another.
For example, in Ontario, in the orange zone, it is possible to have gatherings in private homes with a limited number of participants and the bars are open until 10 p.m., which is not the case in Quebec. Not to mention that there is no curfew in Ontario.
“It can be confusing. The best thing is to consult the websites of the two governments, ”suggested the interim director of Public Health in the Outaouais, Dr. Brigitte Pinard.
She admitted at a press conference on Wednesday that the Ottawa situation played in the balance.
“We are definitely looking at what is going on around us. Ottawa’s more stable situation remains an important factor [du changement de couleur]. This is an element that has been taken into account. ”
The direction of public health in the Outaouais, however, warns the population against the relaxation of health instructions given the community transmission still present and the variants of the virus identified in Ottawa.
“We can afford to lighten the measures, we have some room for maneuver, but the risk remains real, especially since it is only a matter of time before we see variants arriving in the region” , warned Dr. Brigitte Pinard.
The Outaouais had 124 active cases of COVID-19 on its territory on Wednesday, five of which required hospitalization.
