Penultimate test for VfL Wolfsburg before the first round of the cup at FC Carl Zeiss Jena starts in two weeks. Hosts Mechelen were largely overwhelmed with Wolfsburg’s offensive performance. Luca Waldschmidt scored to make it 2-0 (11′), Omar Marmoush (33′) and Ridle Baku (36′) followed up. A directly converted corner ensured Mechelen’s connection through Marian Shved before the break (41′).
In the second half, it wasn’t just Wolfsburg’s attacking momentum that ebbed away. Mechelen came to the result cosmetics. Hernandez scored to make it 4:2 (59th) into the almost empty VfL goal, Hairemans even reduced the lead to 3:4 (78th).
The Belgians start the new season next weekend and then expect Royal Antwerp. Coach there is since this summer Mark van Bommel, who was the Wolves coach from July to the end of October 2021. VfL Wolfsburg will host FC Brentford from the English Premier League for a dress rehearsal next Saturday.
