Vimeo app for Apple TV and smart TVs will be discontinued

Video streaming platform Vimeo announced that it will discontinue its apps for smart TVs and set-top boxes next day June 27th. The informations are from Engadget.

According to the company, which intends to focus its efforts on creating resources for companies and creators, the app is no longer “consistent” with its quality standards. As of the end of the month, anyone who wants to watch a video on Vimeo on a big screen will necessarily have to do so from their smartphone or tablet via AirPlay or Chromecast.

The company has even started displaying an alert in its app with a message about its discontinuation:

Caro ⁦@Vimeo. I use your app to do everything. Does this mean I can’t watch any of the hundreds of videos I’ve saved in my “Watch Later” list on my TV? Damn…

The company highlighted, however, that the change will not affect apps from Vimeo OTT Enterprise. The platform’s main app, worth noting, is available (at least for now) for the following platforms:

  • Apple TV
  • Android TV
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Amazon Fire TV Stick
  • Year

This change should mainly affect users who used to “marathon” several videos on the platform, as well as those who used the “watch later” feature of the app. The app, it’s worth noting, had been released in 2016, initially only on Apple TV, Android TV, and Roku devices.
