[Compiled by Chen Chengliang/Comprehensive report]The British “Daily Mail” reported that the Wuhan laboratory in China, which is at the heart of the controversy over the origin of the COVID-19 virus, discovered a new virus code-named “LsPyV KY187” in striped grass mice last year. The pathogen belongs to the polyoma virus family and can infect humans. Chinese experts say the impact of the virus on people is unclear.

Polyomaviridae are double-stranded DNA viruses that cause tumors, some of which infect the respiratory system, kidneys or brain. However, the known human polyomaviruses are widely distributed and have a high infection rate, but usually only cause obvious clinical manifestations or even disease in a few immunocompromised hosts. Under natural conditions, the symptoms after infection are mild and generally do not induce tumor.

According to the report, Chinese scientists found the virus in a striped grass rat after testing hundreds of rodents in Kenya, Africa in 2016 and 2019. The sample was then sent to the Wuhan Institute of Virology for analysis. Published in the Chinese Journal of Virology.

Because the new virus is not closely related to any known pathogen, its effects in humans are unclear and require further evaluation, the researchers said.

The Daily Mail noted that the discovery underscores the Wuhan lab’s legacy, despite lingering questions about its relationship to the pandemic.

The report mentioned that experts at the Wuhan Institute of Virology have conducted extensive research on bat and other animal coronaviruses, and are known to be conducting experiments on known close relatives of the COVID-19 virus, which also has a controversial “gain of function”. (gain-of-function) experiments that involve patching a virus to make it more contagious or lethal.
