Vitamin D, omega-3 and exercise can effectively protect the elderly – healing practice

Measures to prevent cancer: Risk drops by 61 percent

A simple combination treatment of high-dose Vitamin D, Omega-3 fatty acids and one training program can older people according to a large international study effectively protect against cancer.

researchers of University of Zurich report that a combination of high-dose vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and a simple at-home exercise regimen Reduce cancer risk in healthy adults over 70 by up to 61 percent can. The results were recently published in the journal “Frontiers in Aging” presented.

Cancer prevention needs to be improved

After heart disease, cancer is the second leading cause of death. The risk increases with age Krebs to get sick. Simple preventive measures to protect against cancer are therefore of great importance for public health.

However, currently available offers for prevention of cancer are rather limited. “For middle-aged and elderly adults, they are now largely limited to screening and immunizations”emphasizes the head of studies, Professor Heike A. Bischoff-Ferrari.

Three simple measures to protect against cancer

As part of the so-called DO-HEALTH study, the working group led by Bischoff-Ferrari has now for the first time examined the combined benefit of three simple and inexpensive measures to prevent cancer: Vitamin D, Omega-3 and exercise.

  • Studies in recent years have already confirmed that vitamin D inhibits the growth of cancer cells.
  • Omega-3 supports this process by slowing down the transformation of normal cells into cancer cells by the fatty acids.
  • Physical activity improves immune function and reduces inflammation, which is often the basis of cancer.

Are the measures complementary?

So far, however, it has not been examined whether the effects of the individual measures complement each other. This gap in knowledge has now been closed. The international research team checked the effectiveness of the combined measures on 2157 participants from five European countries.

Cancer risk fell by 61 percent

The evaluation of the three-year study showed that daily intake of high-dose vitamin D3 in combination with omega-3 fatty acids and implementation of an exercise program in healthy people over 70 years of age significantly cumulative works.

Each measure is already having an effect on its own. If all three measures were combined, it fell Cancer risk in the subjects by a total of 61 percent.

The group found to have the lowest risk of cancer received daily 2000 IE Vitamin D3 and one gram of omega-3 fatty acids. In addition, the participants led Independent strength training three times a week through at home.

High security at low cost

“Although our results should be replicated in a longer-term and even larger study, the three measures already qualify due to their high safety and low costs to reduce the high burden of cancer in older adults.”, sums up Bischoff-Ferrari. (vb)
