Volodymyr Zelensky asks OAS countries to support sanctions against Russia

The President of Ukraine, Volodímir Zelenskiasked on Wednesday the countries of the Americas support sanctions against Russiaspeaking during the 52nd OAS General Assembly in Lima.

“We are doing everything, everything, to end the long list of Ukrainian victims that Russia is creating. This is why I am writing to you. We need your support,” he said in a pre-recorded video in English.

Zelensky urged the American countries to remember their struggles for independence 200 years ago.

“Which side would Simón Bolívar be on in the war that Russia unleashed against Ukraine? Who would José de San Martín support? Who would Miguel Hidalgo sympathize with? I think they would not help someone who is looting a smaller country,” he said.

ask to increase support

The Ukrainian president thanked the American nations that “already strongly supported Ukraine and condemned the Russian war,” and also the OAS for suspending Russia’s permanent observer status.

“But we need more,” he exhorted.

Thus, he asked “please” to condemn Russia’s “aggressive policies” in the UN General Assembly.

He also urged no business contacts with Russia after its invasion of Ukraine in late February.

“Prevent your companies and countries from being connected with those natural and legal persons in Russia through whom you carry out your terror against Ukraine. Support sanctions against Russia to limit your business operations with Russia,” he said.

“And the third level of support we need is at the level of ordinary people. I’m not asking for much, just spreading the truth about this war and the casualties caused by Russian aggression,” he concluded, before closing his words in Spanish with a ” Long live freedom”.

On March 25, the OAS called for an end to possible “war crimes” in Ukraine, in a resolution supported by 28 of the 34 active members of the regional bloc, and on April 21 suspended Russia as a permanent observer.
