Dhe chairman of the Junge Union (JU), Tilman Kuban, voted for the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister in the final written election of the CDU chairman. “Of course I chose Armin Laschet in the postal vote,” said Kuban of the FAZ. After the Junge Union had spoken out in favor of the candidate Friedrich Merz in a member survey last November, Kuban had always emphasized that he would vote for Merz at the digital party congress, because the JU’s vote is binding on him.
Merz was slightly inferior to Laschet in the digital preselection, in the subsequent postal vote the delegates can only vote for or against Laschet or abstain. Kuban said now, “All those who fought with full zeal for their party chairman candidate should now just as passionately campaign for cohesion in the CDU”. Everyone wanted to convince people that the CDU and CSU could govern the country better and that they had the right ideas for the future.
“I have always made it clear that those who prevail at the digital party congress can then rely on the full support of the entire Junge Union if they also give room to the conservative, economically liberal idea. Armin Laschet will do that. I am convinced of that.”
Kuban praised Merz for calling in a letter to CDU members on Monday evening to elect Laschet in the written vote. “With his election call for Armin Laschet, Friedrich Merz is making an important contribution to the urgently needed cohesion in the Union. This is the only way we can survive in the super election year and prevent a green-red-red alliance in autumn. “
