Vuelta: Romain Bardet takes the 14th stage, his first victory on a Grand Tour since 2017

The double for France! After the victory of Florian Sénéchal on Friday during the 13th stage, Romain Bardet won this Saturday during the 14th stage of the Vuelta, at the end of the 165.7 km which separated Don Benito and Pico Villuercas. The French edged out the Spaniard Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) and the Australian Jay Vine (Alpecin-Fenix), both relegated to 44 seconds. This is his very first victory with the DSM team, which he joined at the end of 2020. With 50 points, he also takes the best climber jersey of the Tour of Spain. This is the Frenchman’s first victory in a grand tour since the 12th stage of the Tour de France 2017.

A mountain stage which suited Bardet, an excellent climber, who attacked 6 kilometers from the finish and never let go of the lead. A great consolation prize, above all, for the one who had fallen heavily at the start of the lap, during the fifth stage, then showing a very big delay in the overall standings. After this victory, he remains 25th in the standings. It is the Norwegian Odd Christian Eiking (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert) who is still the leader and the red jersey, ahead of the general of the French Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) and the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma).

Sunday, another mountain event awaits the riders, with 197.5 km between Navalmoral de la Mata and El Barraco. A long stage, with four passes including two of the first category. The Vuelta will end on September 5, after the 21st stage.
