BEIRUT, May 28, 2021 (Xinhua) — The United States of America announced on Friday the provision of $179 million and three boats to support the Lebanese Army, at the conclusion of a 12-day joint military exercise.
Today, units of the Lebanese army and elements of the US and Jordanian armies conducted a maneuver that simulated raiding and controlling a hijacked ship and attacking terrorist cells in two mountainous areas, at the conclusion of the annual joint exercise “Resolute Union 2021”.
The official Lebanese National News Agency stated that the maneuver took place in the presence of the Commander of the Lebanese Army, General Joseph Aoun, the Chairman of the Jordanian Joint Chiefs of Staff, Major General Youssef Hunaiti, the Assistant Commander of the Naval Forces in the US Central Command, Rear Admiral Curtis Rancho, and the ambassadors of the United States and Jordan in Lebanon.
US Ambassador to Lebanon Dorothy Shea said in a speech that “the current joint exercise is the largest with the Lebanese army, as it is being carried out for the first time between three armies.”
Shea announced “to provide 120 million dollars to the Lebanese army in the field of training and defense means, in addition to providing three coast guard boats for patrols, and 59 million dollars to support the army’s capabilities in protecting and controlling the eastern borders.”
The ambassador indicated that the Lebanese army received last week from the United States 95 containers of ammunition, valued at more than 55 million dollars, with the aim of “preparing and assisting the operations of the Lebanese army.”
She renewed her country’s long-term commitment to Lebanon, stressing what she described as “our vitally important security partnership.”
Since 2006, the United States has provided more than $2.5 billion in military aid to Lebanon to strengthen its sovereignty, secure its borders, and confront internal and extremist threats, according to the US ambassador.
The exercise, which was carried out from May 17 to 28, is the 21st of the “Resolute Union” series between the US and Lebanese armies, and the first as a multilateral exercise with the participation of the Jordanian army.
The exercise, which was carried out in Lebanon and the eastern Mediterranean, aims to enhance interoperability and fortify military relations between the US Navy and the Lebanese and Jordanian armies, in addition to providing training between the US Navy and regional partners, according to the US Embassy in Beirut.
