Weightlifter Diaz wins the first gold medal for the Philippines

TOKYO – Filipino weightlifter Hedile Diaz on Monday became the country’s first gold medalist, by storming the 55-kg women’s weightlifting competition at the Tokyo Games.

In her fourth participation in the Olympics, the 30-year-old gained a total of 224 kilograms, setting an Olympic record.

China’s Liao Qiuyun won the silver with a total of 223 kilograms, while Kazakhstan’s Zulfia Chinshanlu won the bronze with a total of 213 kilograms.
