Despite the Covid-19 pandemic that has brought football to a standstill for much of the year, the past 12 months have been marked by great victories, incredible goals and memorable titles. FIFA.com looks back in figures for the year 2020.

The numbers one: the best players and coaches of the year 2020 were awarded at the ceremony of The Best FIFA Football Awards™. Lucy Bronze (FIFA player), Robert Lewandowski (FIFA player), Sarina Wiegman (FIFA Coach for Women’s Football), Jürgen Klopp (FIFA Coach for Men’s Football), Sarah Bouhaddi (FIFA Goalkeeper), Manuel Neuer (FIFA Goalkeeper), Son Heungmin (Prix Puskás de la FIFA), Marivaldo Francisco da Silva (FIFA Fan Award) and Mattia Agnese (FIFA Fair Play Award) won in the different categories. In addition, Marcus Rashford moved back first FIFA Foundation Special Prize as a reward for his work in the charitable field.

Two exceptional champions have passed away this year. Diego Armando Maradona and Paolo Rossi died on November 25 and December 9, respectively. These genius players will leave a great void on the football planet.

In 2016, 2017 and 2019, the Monterrey club fell at the gates of the feat but, this year, Andre Pierre Gignac and his teammates ended the streak with a 2-1 win over Los Angeles FC, a victory that opens the doors to the FIFA Club World Cup.

Never the Barça had conceded eight goals in a European match. This result undoubtedly brought back fond memories to Hansi Flick. Six years earlier, Germany had handed Brazil a scathing 7-1 in the semi-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup ™. At the time, the current Bayern coach was Joachim Löw’s assistant. Bayern won the Champions League in stride and ends 2020 with a record of five out of five titles. A sixth could follow in February, on the occasion of the FIFA Club World Cup.

matches, that’s all it took to Erling Haaland to reach the 15-goal mark in the UEFA Champions League. The Norwegian became the fastest player to achieve this feat, thanks to a new double signed for Borussia Dortmund on November 24.

straight matches, Lionel Messi has found the net in the UEFA Champions League. Until now, no one had ever made such a series. The Argentine crossed the decisive milestone on October 20, against Ferencváros.

years after his last coronation, Liverpool ascended to the throne of England last June. The patience of Reds was rewarded with two remarkable performances: they were crowned with seven days of the term, with a total of 99 points.

goals were scored by Christine Sinclair in selection of Canada. The Portland striker dethroned the American at the start of the year Abby Wambach to become the queen of international scorers, thanks to a double in Olympic qualifying against Saint-Kitts-and-Nevis.
