Bob Huggins Club managed to beat Ohio State # 2 the old-fashioned way.
In true West Virginia fashion, the mountaineers just rolled up their sleeves and worked out the Buckeyes in the 67:59 win in Cleveland or did better.
Every player on the squad had a role and the deck was certainly stacked because the climbers struggled with nasty problems, missed free throws, and were too loose with the ball to survive Ohio State.
After the Buckeyes started the game 6-8 from the field, they made only 9-40 from the field over the remaining 32:26 of the game. Things were particularly impressive in the second half, when the US state of Ohio only scored 5 to 24 goals for 20 percent, while hitting only 27 percent from below.
Ohio State was down 49 percent and has already had three dominant wins over the top ten teams. But that was a completely different story.
If West Virginia forces 12 sales in this second frame after 10 in the first, it is a recipe for achieving the first win over a team in second place since the 2017 season.
Even if the climbers tried to put the ball in the basket over the late stages of the second half, they always generated stops.
It was kind of a setback for some of Huggin’s best clubs during his tenure in Morgantown, far from what happened last season when the defense was at best voluntary. It’s another year, of course, but this effort has only driven this house out.
“We played terribly hard in the second half. I wasn’t really happy with our performance in the first half, but the second half was what my boys are used to. And it wasn’t just a few people, ”said Huggins.
And he’s right.
This was an overall victory for the team as the climbers had only two double-digit players, led by Deuce McBride (21 points) and Chase Harler (10) 45 of his 67 points from the bench show the depth of this team even against a high-ranking opponent ,
This was especially true for the post where Derek Culver and Oscar Tshiebwe scored only 7 points and 13 rebounds and played only 33 minutes due to foul problems. This forced Gabe Osabuohien to 31 minutes, and it took Logan Routt 11 more minutes to get inside.
“We were dealing with nasty problems that most teams couldn’t do,” said Huggins.
The mountaineers are now 11: 1 and have a real chance to push the ranking even higher than number 22, which they are currently beating with the Resume Building against the Buckeyes. West Virginia has had several good victories this year, but this will be considered the victory banner.
It was a highly competitive undertaking that has been a hallmark of the Huggins teams for years. And it is clear that any idea that this year could be like the last should be thrown out the window.
