The NBA celebrates this morning (Come on, 01:00) his draft, a process in which the 30 franchises of the best basketball league in the world choose players under 23 years of age of the different universities that make up the NCAA (National League Athletic Association) and, to a lesser extent, of the international scene. This event has been held since 1947, with changes in its trajectory, and is the source of eternal youth for the competition, as well as a link that allows players unknown to the general public to reach the top of this sport.
The draft is like a fantasy league. An order of election is established based on how the teams have been the previous season. How much worse results, more chances of getting a better position, although being the last classified does not guarantee to choose first. In addition, there is an immovable rule: the franchises that have qualified for the playoffs will never be able to reach the top 15 places, reserved for the “worst” teams, those that have not played the postseason. If the Utah Jazz is among the top 16 teams this year, it will not be able to access one of the top 15 in the 2021 draft, for example. This year the first three picks will be for the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Golden State Warriors and the Charlotte Hornets. The teams, since they know in which position they will choose, watch the players with intensity, with private and public training, to see if they would fit into their squad. Today they will reap the fruits of that work.
Currency of change or future star?
The draft is a mechanism so that the inequalities of the league do not become even greater, which allows the weakest at the basketball level to obtain valuable pieces, young and at a reduced cost. The Lakers, for example, and despite being one of the NBA’s historical figures, after the retirement of Kobe Bryant, they had several seasons of little sporting success. Thanks to them they got young people like Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram or Josh Hart in different drafts. Although they did not improve the course of the franchise, these served as bargaining chip in the Anthony Davis transfer, one of the best in the league and providential in achieving the last NBA title for the Californians.
Although it is usually the usual, these young people not only serve to be transferred by higher category players. For example, Luka Doncic was chosen as number three from the 2018 draft by the Dallas Mavericks. His talent has helped revitalize a franchise that had been in depression since he won the ring in 2012. He also happened in Miami with Wade, with Young in Atlanta or with Nowitzki in the Mavericks themselves. A good draft pick, with the bit of luck that talent needs, can change a franchise forever.
