When the (elite) unit does the force

It cannot be a coincidence that in the interview carried out just before writing these lines, the creators of The Unity, Dani de la Torre and Beto Marini, brought up the great example of Fauda. The Spanish and Israeli series talk about the work of elite units and, although they are not very similar, they show the same will to narrate an almost unknown task in which its members need to be a pineapple in order not to spill their lives.

“Fauda”
The writer Avi Issacharoff and the actor Lior Raz, both inexperienced in audiovisual creation -although the second one is a performer with a long history-, they took out of their sleeve and their own experiences in “the military” this little miracle, which It has been successful in half the world thanks to Netflix.

At first glance, you might think that Raz, a bald, beefy guy, a “chubby fit,” claims the role of hero just for owning the ball. The result belies the malevolent thesis thanks to some short and addictive chapters, which always end at the top and remember American productions such as 24 for their rhythm. It is not that Fauda could be American, but that the Americans could not replicate this success as they did with
Homeland
, actually a copy of Hatufim.

Fauda’s scripts also offer an enormous scope. The good ones are the special forces and the terrorists represent the enemy to beat, of course, but the scripts know how to delve into the complexity of the situations and the shared pain. Nor is it a series afraid to show certain procedures. Morally each will have his opinion, as it happened with Jack Bauer, but the narrative result is impeccable.

In the newly released third season, the scripts are not affected by the addition of Noah Stollman, who has even improved the result with his ability to illustrate the moment when fierce men are falling apart. What they cry. The word “fauda”, by the way, means chaos in Arabic, and it is the term used by the Israeli covert forces when any of its members is unmasked and urgently needs help if they want to get out alive. One of the difficulties for the viewer, in fact, is to distinguish when its protagonists speak in Hebrew or Arabic, something that the subtitles solve better thanks to the use of square brackets. Lovers of dubbing may be lazy, but the reward is worth it.

“Unit”
There will be time to talk more about this six-episode miniseries that Movistar + will premiere on May 15. As in the previous case, it has been enough to investigate reality to accumulate material to spare. A police unit specializing in jihadist terrorism, which we unfortunately know closely, tries to prevent the preparation of a major attack.

A scene is enough to understand the sensitivity of its authors. In the worst triumph of fanaticism seen on screen, the camera takes an original point of view, a brilliant resource for showing without showing. It is a respectful and subtle sequence and, thanks to that, much more effective, without having to swipe at the story with the worst of reality. In two weeks we will be able to tell something more, including the great work of the artistic team, with Nathalie Poza -I love this actress’s diction-, Michel Noher, Marian Álvarez, Luis Zahera, Raúl Fernández, Carlos Blanco ….
