Vitamin D supplements can help especially in the dark season to compensate for a vitamin D deficiency. There are certain groups of people for whom taking vitamin D is particularly recommended:

  • Infants and young children: A lack of vitamin D can lead to rickets, a disease in which the bones deform. Affected children are therefore prescribed vitamin D by the pediatrician. No self medication!

Vitamin D supplements: what’s the right amount?

Vitamins can be overdosed. So what is the right measure for a healthy adult? The German Nutrition Society specifies 800 IU (international units) as the maintenance dose. If a defect is found, it can also be a little more: “The standard dosage is 1,000 IU”, says pharmacist Markus Friedrich. “You can take this daily dose without hesitation.” Because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and is more easily absorbed by the body through dietary fats, he also recommends taking it with meals.
