Who are they particularly recommended for?

Vitamin D supplements can help especially in the dark season to compensate for a vitamin D deficiency. There are certain groups of people for whom taking vitamin D is particularly recommended:

  • People who are particularly into themselves in winter indoors stop or rarely leave the house (working, elderly people in need of care)
  • Residents of places to the north, In Hamburg, for example, the rate of medically determined vitamin D deficiency is a good 50 percent above the national average, in 2011 it was even 80 percent.
  • People over 65: With age, the production of vitamin D decreases. This can result in bone softening with muscle weakness and bone pain (osteomalacia). Here, vitamin D can even be prescribed by the doctor.
  • Patients who attend diabetes or one chronic gastrointestinal, liver or kidney disease suffer or die drugs take that affect vitamin D metabolism
  • People with one darker skin tone, With an increased melanin content in the skin, the UV-B rays of the sun are blocked more.
  • Infants and young children: A lack of vitamin D can lead to rickets, a disease in which the bones deform. Affected children are therefore prescribed vitamin D by the pediatrician. No self medication!

Vitamin D supplements: what’s the right amount?

Vitamins can be overdosed. So what is the right measure for a healthy adult? The German Nutrition Society specifies 800 IU (international units) as the maintenance dose. If a defect is found, it can also be a little more: “The standard dosage is 1,000 IU”, says pharmacist Markus Friedrich. “You can take this daily dose without hesitation.” Because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and is more easily absorbed by the body through dietary fats, he also recommends taking it with meals.
