The German Chancellor’s Christian Democratic Party is organizing its congress on Friday with the election of its new president and potential leader of the conservatives in the legislative elections of 2021 in sight. Three men are in the running.

Several times postponed due to Covid-19, the 33rd CDU Congress, the formation ofAngela Merkel, finally opens on Friday by videoconference. The 1,001 delegates will appoint the new president of the Christian Democratic Party there. The winner, who will be known on Saturday, could become the leader of the conservatives in the legislative elections of September 26 – he will have to be confirmed in the spring – and therefore succeed the German Chancellor who, after fifteen years in power, has chosen to leave the hand.

The winner of this internal election will not automatically be a candidate for the Chancellery. He will first have to deal with Markus Söder, leader of the Bavarian sister party CSU, who has become one of the favorite personalities of the Germans thanks to a cautious approach to the pandemic. Even if he denies it, Markus Söder dreams of being invited by the CDU to take the plunge after a series of local elections in mid-March. And become, perhaps, the first chancellor from the CSU.
