WHO warns countries with declining infection numbers to stay “vigilant”
The countries where the number of cases of infection with the new coronavirus is in decline must remain “vigilant”, warned an official of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday.
“Even if the number of cases decreases, all countries must remain vigilant. You’ve heard it before, but we really need to stress it again. Don’t let your guard down, ”said Maria Van Kerkhove, technical manager of the WHO health emergency program, during a virtual briefing.
“It’s good to see the measures take effect and transmission decrease. But now is not the time to let our guard down. It is even time to amplify that, ”she added. Infection cases worldwide have surpassed 61 million, with the death toll of 1.4 million, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University.
“What we don’t want to see are situations where we go from a state of so-called confinement to control the virus to a state of so-called confinement,” said Van Kerkhove.
