9.42am: Japan on “maximum alert”
After having identified a record number of daily coronavirus infections, Japan is on “maximum alert” said Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Thursday, without, however, foreseeing new restrictive measures immediately.
More than 2,000 new positive Covid-19 cases were recorded in the country on Wednesday, a national record. Tokyo also exceeded the threshold of 500 new daily cases on Thursday, according to local media, a second record in a row for the country’s capital after 493 cases detected the day before.
Although relatively low compared to other countries, these figures show a sudden resurgence of the pandemic in the Japanese archipelago, where tests are not carried out on a large scale.
