Why Colleges in Religiously Diverse Country should teach Religious Literacy?

Religious literacy refers to an individual’s knowledge level and the ability to understand one’s faith. The concept of literacy in one’s religious traditions is growing exponentially. Thanks to globalization, there is a diverse group of people everywhere: from your workplace to your college. Each of these people shares their own religious traditions and has their understanding of religion topics. What faith means to one person can be completely different for someone else. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that one learns the proper etiquette to handle such an important aspect in someone’s life with the utmost respect.


Unsurprisingly, college students and religion are being taken seriously, and there have been several proposals to include literacy in religious diversity in the classroom. As such, there are several schools and colleges that assign essays, summaries, and research papers on faith or religion topics to their students. Is it important to teach religious literacy at college?

There have been proposals for including at least one course of academic study in religious diversity, which is currently a work in progress.


There is a significant knowledge gap! 


There is a significant relationship between college students and religious topics as these scholars form the nation’s working population and will have to deal with and adapt to globalization. If some scholars lack knowledge of religious intolerance, it can have a significant impact on their personal or work relationships.


However, studies have shown that scholars, currently in knowledge, have not gotten the required skill sets or the experience to navigate through diverse peers. A recent survey conducted by the Interfaith Diversity Experiences and Attitudes Longitudinal Survey (IDEALS) in 122 campuses shows that over 68% of scholars are illiterate in terms of diverse beliefs and religious topics.


When students were given a test to check how well versed they are with religious views and diversity among scholars, most of them earned low grades of C or below. The findings were sub-standard, to say the least, and goes to prove that most academic institutions have a problem at hand. They haven’t been able to instill religious tolerance among their students, and these scholars have to be adequately trained in literacy to help them better cope with globalization and its impact in the future.


Does religion come last?


There are several issues that students have to face while in college. Many conversations take place during one’s academic pursuit that can include inclusion, equity, and diversity. However, when people have bridged their way through diverse cultural groups, talking about religion almost always comes last. The IDEALS survey found that while students are open to accepting and tolerating people of several diverse groups, they have been giving a low priority to religion.



The global context is forever changing and is more accepting of people from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. It is crucial that every individual learns how to participate in civic life and work collaboratively with people from all diversities. An academic insight into the religious dimensions of global views and cultures can help individuals immensely to guide their way through individuals, communities, and nations.
