The statement as investigated Ignacio Sanchez Galan scheduled for tomorrow at the National High Court was preceded on Monday by his Chief of Staff when Iberdrola hired José Manuel Villarejo’s company. Rafael Orbegozo’s explanations have not convinced Judge Manuel García Castellón, in light of the tone in which part of the interrogation has taken place. Orbegozo is accused in this branch of the Tándem case because, among other things, he endorsed the invoices for alleged security services that covered up payments to Cenyt, the Villarejo company. According to sources present at the statement, the investigating magistrate in the case, Manuel García Castellón, asked the defendant if “it is normal for the president’s chief of staff” to sign security invoices. Orbegozo’s explanation has been that yes, he signed the ones that corresponded to expenses of his cabinet, but also others related to the activity of senior managers, in particular on security and travel to other countries, as is the case with the investigated invoices . The judge has not seemed to be convinced, because he has asked again “what does that have to do” with a chief of staff of the president. When he has given a similar answer, the judge has started again. “He has not understood the question or he does not want to understand it, we are going to understand that the first thing…”, he said, before reformulating the question: “What does the president of the company have to do with these security tasks , of the hundreds of that type? Why precisely in relation to Cenyt? Orbegozo has declared that given his position he was in a position, better than anyone else, to certify that those trips to South America that generated the security expenses had occurred. The attitude of the instructor has not changed who, according to the same sources, has recalled that these invoices, precisely, are false, as recognized by the then head of Security, the accused Antonio Asenjo.

Orbegozo has indicated in this regard that he was deceived and has added that he did not consult the invoices with Galán, who will have to answer tomorrow for the various Cenyt contracts. According to the indictment, Iberdrola commissioned four cases from Villarejo. The first, in 2004, sought to deactivate the social movement against the installation of a combined cycle power plant in Arcos de la Frontera (Cádiz). That same year another assignment was made to spy on the activities of Manuel Pizarro, then chairman of rival Endesa. In 2009, the Posy project focused on specifically investigating Florentino Perez, according to the judge “in order to know any circumstance that, if necessary, could be used in a conflict scenario with Iberdrola”. Finally, a final assignment in 2011 sought to obtain data from the Swiss company Dobrogea wind farm. These contracts with the commissioner’s company, according to the investigating judge, could involve crimes of bribery, false documents and against privacy.
