Why drinking more than one cup of coffee a day is good for your health?

What is this study based on?

For more than twelve years, researchers have examined the impact of coffee on some 449,563 adults aged 40 to 69 with no history of cardiovascular problems. These have been divided into different groups, namely those who do not drink coffee, those who drink less than one cup per day, one cup per day, two to three cups per day, four to five cups per day, and more than five cups a day. This information was collected on the basis of a questionnaire which also took into account the type of coffee drunk by the subjects of the study, namely soluble coffee, ground coffee, or decaffeinated coffee. Those who drank coffee were compared to those who did not, to draw a number of conclusions.

What conclusions?

It turns out that coffee is beneficial when it comes to heart health some participants. The scientists had to refine their results by taking into account high blood pressure, diabetes, alcohol consumption, smoking and obesity. Once this has been done, people who drink two to three cups of any coffee have been shown to die less than those who don’t. The risk of death is reduced by up to 27% with ground coffee, a figure that rises to 14% with decaffeinated and 11% for soluble coffee.

Furthermore, the cardiovascular illnesses are less often seen in people who drink two to three cups of coffee a day. Ground coffee reduces this risk by 20%, followed by soluble coffee at 9% and decaffeinated coffee at 6%. Those who drink four to five cups of ground or soluble coffee are less likely to experience arrhythmia, a finding that does not apply to those who drink decaffeinated coffee.

What are the limitations for this study?

If this study is rich in lessons, it still includes limits. Information regarding the number of cups of coffee drunk is based only on the subjects’ estimates at the start of the study. It is therefore impossible to say whether their consumption has changed over time during these twelve years, or whether they have changed the type of coffee they drank. Other studies have already shown that drinking coffee, as long as it is not too sweet and that the consumption remains reasonable, is good for your health, since it notably reduces the risk of diabetes.
