Why Some People React Strongly to Mosquito Bites: Exploring the Science Behind Immune Responses

While some people react quickly to mosquito bites with intense itching, others seem less vulnerable. Explanations.

I never get bitten by mosquitoes“. This sentence, we all hear it when the good weather arrives and the mosquitoes start to show up. But, is it true that they neglect some lucky people? Not quite. As explained LCImosquitoes actually bite everyone but some don’t react and don’t get a pimple.

Indeed, after a bite, many people notice the appearance of a small red itchy bump. In reality, this reaction is not directly caused by the bite but it is a reaction of the immune system to the proteins present in the saliva of the mosquito. Some people react even more strongly and even suffer from an allergy to mosquito bites as explained Health Magazine : “If the size of the bump is very large, there may be an allergy, also called Skeeter’s syndrome, more common in infants, young children and people with primary or secondary immunodeficiency“.

Smell, color

Nevertheless, l’EID Rhône-Alpes confirms that some people still get bitten more than others. Blame it on certain factors:The female locates its prey by its movements, its shape, its colors, then by the carbon dioxide produced by its breathing. Its smell (sweat, perfume), infrared radiation (heat) are also involved. Thus, nervous people who move a lot have a higher body temperature, give off more carbon dioxide and sweat more than others, which attracts mosquitoes more. People with cholesterol also seem more appreciated“. And the colors also seem to matter: “It is noted that mosquitoes have a preference for dark colors: brown, blue, purple; and on the other hand seem to avoid orange, yellow, apple green“.

It is the females that bite because they need blood to ensure the survival of their species: “They need this blood meal to be able to bring their eggs to maturity and therefore to be able to lay them in stride. It is said that a female has this ability to lay 800 to 1000 eggs in her lifetime”explains to TF1 Jean-Claude Mouret, operational coordinator at EID Méditerranée.
