The Basel Sport Champions 2019 were honored in the St. Jakobshalle on Monday. The youngsters’ prizes were awarded to all 45 winners: from boxing to heptathlon, rowing, judo to figure skating and many more. All Swiss champions were honored.
Junior team of the year 2019 meanwhile became the U19 women of the Basel rowing club in a doubles. They were able to secure the Swiss championship title on the Rotsee.
Young athlete of the year 2019 meanwhile is Judo U21 Swiss champion Yannic Johner. Aline Kämpf has since become the young athlete of the year. For her part, she is Swiss champion in the heptathlon among the U20 juniors.
Touched handball icon
Vice President Christoph Socin awarded the Sport Basel Prize for special services away from the headlights. He handed it over to a visibly moved Jürg Ringier. The sports teacher legend and handball icon made for a laugh: he actually wanted to go to the theater this Monday evening. As an anecdote, Ringier tells how he called the Basel fencer Benjamin Steffen «Pierre» during his school days.
Wilson wins title again
The water polo players of the WSV Basel can cheer at the elite awards: they were named Team of the Year. Last year they won the Swiss championship title for the tenth time.
Karin Suter-Erath becomes sportswoman of the year. In wheelchair badminton, she won the World Cup bronze medal at the home World Cup in joggeli. For the third time she was awarded the Basel Sportswoman of the Year award. Meanwhile, sprinter Alex Wilson will be athlete of the year. He won the title last year. In 2019 he celebrated two Swiss championship titles: over 100 and 200 meters.
