What can be done to reduce biological age?
Diet and lifestyle seem to have such a strong influence on biological age that they can reduce it by many years within a few weeks. Since biological age plays a role in causing many diseases, lowering biological age can help people live healthier and longer lives.
The current study, led by researchers at McGill University, is the first to show that changes in lifestyle and diet can lead to an immediate and rapid decrease in biological age. The study was published in the journal AGING-US, which appears in English.
A special intervention program was examined.
The current study looked at 43 healthy adult men between the ages of 50 and 72 years. They participated in an eight-week program that included diet, sleep, exercise, and relaxation. In addition, the participants were given probiotics and phytonutrients.
The joint intervention program was developed by experts to manipulate a biological mechanism known as DNA methylation, specifically DNA methylation patterns, which have been shown to be highly predictive of biological age.
Three years were deducted from the biological age.
By compensating for DNA methylation, the interventions resulted in a statistically significant reduction in biological age. The biological age of the participants was three years younger than the control group after treatment, the researchers said.
