Women’s IPL | Women’s IPL Next March; First season to run for four weeks: Report – News18 Malayalam

The much-awaited Women’s IPL (WIPL) tournament will reportedly take place in March 2023. The tournament will be held for a month. A senior BCCI official confirmed that there will be five teams in the competition. The Women’s IPL will be held after the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.

The women’s IPL tournament will start in the first week of March. We have set aside four weeks for that. The T20 World Cup will be held in South Africa from February 9 to 26. A women’s IPL tournament is planned to be held soon after that,” a senior BCCI official told PTI.

“Now the competition will be held in five teams. However, later the number of teams can be six. The bidding process for the teams will be announced soon,” he added.

BCCI President Saurav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah had earlier confirmed that the women’s IPL tournament will be held in 2023 in an interview given to PTI. Cricket lovers believe that the women’s IPL will usher in a revolution and the standard of women’s cricket in India will soar.

“Current IPL team owners have expressed interest in owning women’s teams,” Shah had said in an earlier interview to PTI. Before that, Ganguly had also made it clear that the women’s IPL tournament would start in 2023. “I believe that next year i.e. 2023 will be a very good time to start women’s IPL. It will be as spectacular as the men’s IPL,” he said.

It is reported that IPL teams like Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings have all shown interest in acquiring women’s teams. UTV Group founder Ronnie Screwvala had tweeted that he was interested in owning a women’s team.

The BCCI is expected to discuss issues related to the Women’s IPL at its annual general meeting in September this year. There are also reports that further discussions will be about the broadcasting rights. Also, veteran Indian players like Smriti Mandana, Harmanpreet Kaur and former Indian captain Mithali Raj have also expressed their interest to be a part of the maiden season of the Women’s IPL. Mithali Raj retired from international cricket in June this year.
