Refreshed tourist magnet: Built in the first century AD, the Colosseum suffered from earthquakes and fires. Now it is given a floor. The project is not undisputed.

Dhe Colosseum in Rome will again have a walk-in arena. The currently exposed underground area will be covered, as was the case until the 19th century. Visitors will then be able to stand in the arena, and events are also planned.

The renovation should “contribute to the preservation and protection of the archaeological structures, restore the original image of the Colosseum and restore its nature as a stage,” said the Italian Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini on Sunday. An engineering firm in Milan won the tender for the controversial project. Its planned construction is reminiscent in its form and function of the wooden floor during the first phase of use of the amphitheater built between the years 72 and 80.

The new floor will consist of wooden slats that can be opened and pushed aside completely. The redesign of the Colosseum, which 25,000 people visited daily until 2019, is slated to begin next year and be completed by 2023.
