In an apartment building in Queens, New York City, overlooking the fireworks that evening, an elderly white man glanced at young people trying to climb without a mask and grumbled, “Have you forgotten how to wear a mask?”

Although it didn’t happen in New York, the indiscriminate shooting at the Independence Day Parade outside Chicago on the same morning also weighed heavily on American hearts.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) deployed security guards at major viewing points such as Midtown East in Manhattan, Long Island City in Queens, and the East River River in Brooklyn on that day, placing officers and controlling vehicles.
