World Ski Championships 2023: James Crawford duped world elite in Super-G – Alexander Aamodt Kilde beaten by a hundredth

In the shortest Super-G in World Championship history, Canadian James Crawford’s winning time was just 1:07.22 minutes.

Odermatt, Pinturault, Kilde and the new World Champion each set the best time with consecutive start numbers – in the end it was only the blink of an eye that made the difference for 25-year-old Crawford, who had never won a Super-G before. In fact, he finished on the podium only once, second from Kvitfjell in March.

The Canadian’s greatest career success so far was a bronze medal in the Olympic combined in Beijing 2022. In Downhill (fourth place) and Super-G (sixth place), he was already close to the podium.

Sander strong in Super-G – if it weren’t for the one mistake…

BEFORE AN HOUR

In Courchevel, Crawford only used the combination for training purposes on Monday and, after finishing 14th in the Super-G, did without the slalom.

World Ski Championships: Sander convinced

The four German starters delivered mixed results. Andreas Sander managed a positive surprise with ninth place (+0.67 behind). A mistake in the lower part cost the man from Ennepetal an even better place – fifth place was only 0.09 seconds away.

“I was really annoyed while driving. If I have to blame myself for something, then that shouldn’t happen,” said Sander on “ZDF”. And to Crawford as the winner: “There you can see again, the World Cup – there is always at least one surprise on the podium.”

Crazy! Crawford 0.01s ahead of Kilde to gold

Romed Baumann (+1.88) was disappointing, Simon Jocher didn’t really get going after a long injury break either (+1.96). Josef Ferstl 2019, still a Super-G winner in Austria’s Skimekka Kitzbühel, retired after good intermediate times.

The Austrians, who have won medals in every World Cup race so far, were once again among the defeated: Raphael Haaser, third in the station wagon (+0.58 seconds), finished in five as the best ÖSV driver.

Odermatt beaten – Pinturault celebrates

Odermatt (+0.37), who leads the overall and Super-G World Cup, ended up missing the medal by eleven hundredths. However, the Swiss, winner of four of the six Super-G races this World Cup season, is struggling with knee problems.

At first, Odermatt sets the fastest time – but that’s not enough

Veteran Pinturault (+0.26), most recently in December in Beaver Creek in third place on a Super-G podium, used his home advantage as in the combination and won his second World Cup medal.

He’s doing it again! Pinturault out of control

Combination silver medalist Marco Schwarz almost fell and still finished a strong sixth (+0.59), Vincent Kriechmayr (+0.87/13.) failed.

Dominik Paris (Italy) crashed spectacularly and gave up Eurosport but all clear: “The back hurts a bit, but it’s okay.” The Italian starters drove after the death of Elena Franchini (37) with a black ribbon.

Still satisfied

Kilde was satisfied despite just missing out on the gold medal. “That’s how it is in sport. But still: It was cool to drive,” he said on “ORF”. The Norwegian broke his hand in Kitzbühel a few weeks ago, but still drives the speed competitions at the World Cup.

“Bravo!” Handicapped Kilde shines in Super-G

“One hundredth is a shame, but it’s a medal. Maybe next time I’ll be a hundredth ahead. I have the next opportunity on the descent,” said the 30-year-old and was happy like his partner Mikaela Shiffrin the day before Super G silver: “Same start number, same medal – that looks good.”

Friday is a rest day at the World Ski Championships in Méribel and Courchevel. The women’s downhill continues on Saturday (11:00 a.m. live on Eurosport and discovery+), on Sunday the men will contest their descent (also 11:00 a.m.).
