Tomorrow (21st) is Cancer Prevention Day designated by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Cancer is the number one cause of death in Korea for the past 40 years, and it is a disease that requires the most attention.
It is said that a significant part of cancer can be prevented by staying away from alcohol and smoking and adjusting one’s diet, but the basics are very difficult.

About 250,000 new cancer patients are diagnosed each year.
It has increased by 2.5 times in 10 years.
Annual cancer deaths show an increasing trend every year, reaching about 82,700 the year before last.
It has been the undisputed number one cause of death in Koreans for the past 40 years, accounting for one in four deaths.
The lifetime risk of developing cancer is about 37%.
The hope is that a third of cancers are preventable.
It is important to have a healthy lifestyle early on, but smoking is essential as 30% of the causes of cancer are smoking.
Many people think that e-cigarettes are okay, but they are harmful because they contain carcinogens.
“If the harm of conventional cigarettes is 100, (e-cigarettes) is about 65. Being relieved because it’s 65 is the same as taking poison and thinking, ‘I’ll drink some water, so it’s okay’.”
You should also stop drinking.
There is a perception that “a glass or two of wine is good for health”, but alcohol is a group 1 carcinogen, so it is better to avoid drinking it, regardless of the type or quantity.
Another major cause of cancer is food, and you should also pay attention to your eating habits.
Burnt meat and salty foods that cause stomach cancer, red meat such as cow or pig that are bad for the large intestine, and processed meat are avoided as much as possible, and a vegetable-based diet is good for cancer prevention.
Cancers caused by fungal or viral infections can also be prevented through vaccination or treatment.
Also, don’t miss out on cancer screening, which is conducted annually by the government for early detection of cancer.
