Taiwan Haoding Biotech said today that its founder and chairman, Zhang Nianci, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home in San Diego, USA at around 10:00 this morning, at the age of 72.

Hao Ding issued a press release stating that Zhang Nianci spends half his time in the United States and Taiwan on weekdays. During his work in the United States, he remotely connected with the Taipei office and participated in various meetings through video conferences. Talked on the phone to discuss some matters; Haoding Company received the bad news from the United States half an hour later, and the employees were deeply shocked. Hao Ding immediately held an emergency meeting. In addition to holding an interim board of directors in the shortest possible time to select a successor, the company’s business will be managed according to Zhang Nianci’s hierarchical management and full authorization style. Zhang Nianci, born in 1950, graduated from the Chemistry Department of Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan, received a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Brandeis University in the United States, and was a postdoctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Having lived in the United States for decades, he worked in world-renowned pharmaceutical companies such as Merck, Sharp & Dohme, and Rhone-Poulen c Rorer. Zhang Nianci founded his first company, Cinogen, in 1993. The next year, he founded the health food company Pharmanex, and merged Cinogen into Pharmanex. Four years later, Pharmanex was sold to NU SKIN Group for US$135 million. Established Optimer Pharmaceuticals in 1998, and returned to Taiwan in 2002 to establish Taiwan Haoding.

Zhang Nianci has always been enthusiastic about the research and development of new drugs. He proposed the “four talents” conditions for the success of new drugs, namely talent, material selection, intellectual wealth and money, which has been hailed as a classic by the biotechnology industry.
